How to Take CBD Oil: CBD Drops, Coffees and Cocktails

So, you’ve read all about cannabidiol (or CBD as it’s more commonly known) and now you’re thinking of giving it a whirl. It makes sense. The food and wellness industries are buzzing about this natural chemical compound, which is said to help with anxiety, arthritis, pain relief, menopause symptoms and insomnia to name but a few.

You’ve decided you want to try it, so what’s next? When it comes to how to take CBD oil, you’re spoiled for choice. From tinctures and topicals to smoothies and coffee blends, there’s an overwhelming amount of options out there. Unsure where to start? That’s where we come in – here’s our CBD oil guide to help you decide how best to take CBD oil.

How to take CBD Oil?

While there are many ways to take CBD oil, it depends on the strength of the oil. With our 250mg CBD Oils (a great starting point), you put five CBD oil drops under your tongue and hold them there for 30-60 seconds, and do that three times a day. You can, however, freestyle, putting your drops into a smoothie, juice or even your morning cuppa. CBD is said to take the edge off coffee too.

Which brings us to…

9 Ways to Take CBD Oil at Home

1. In a tincture

In layman’s terms, a tincture is a concoction you take by dropper or spray straight into your mouth. You can take CBD oil by putting it directly under your tongue (that part of the mouth is a capillary-rich area and so the CBD will reach your bloodstream quicker). Try dropping a dose of CBD under your tongue and holding it there for a minute before swallowing.

2. In a capsule

CBD oil also comes in a capsule form, which can be a good option for people who want to maintain a consistent amount of the compound in the body. However when CBD is ingested it passes through the digestive tract which means you might have to wait upwards of 30 minutes before experiencing any effect.

3. In a smoothie

Some blends of CBD oil can have a pungent, earthy taste. It’s not for everyone, which is why many people like to mask the flavour with other – more delicious – ingredients. Another way to take CBD is by adding half a teaspoon of CBD oil to your morning smoothie for a calm start to the day. If you’re after some smoothie inspo, head over to the 5 Best Self Care Smoothies With Hemp .

4. In coffee

If only there was a way to capture the energy of coffee without its associated jitters. Oh wait… there is! There are an increasing number of CBD coffee brands popping up, who claim that when coffee beans are infused with CBD, they take away the anxiety that caffeine consumption can cause. This makes the ‘up’ that your coffee gives you a little smoother; it takes the edge off. Or use a dairy-free milk that’s infused with CBD to easily control your dosage and allow you to continue using your favourite coffee blend.

5. In a salad dressing

Now we’re talking the same language, right? Try incorporating a little CBD oil into your daily cooking routine to get a bunch of health benefits without much effort at all. For a delicious and nutritious salad dressing, start with three to four tablespoons of olive oil, then add two teaspoons of CBD, the juice of half a fragrant lemon and salt and pepper. Here’s 5 hemp oil friendly recipes for starters.

6. In a vape pen

Okay so this one might sound a little scary, but vape pens are easy to use and can go undetected because they produce little smoke. The plus side of taking CBD in a vape pen is that when CBD is inhaled, it enters the lungs where it rapidly passes into the bloodstream. However, it’s important to note that the long-term safety of vaping is still unknown.

7. In sweet treats

The beauty of CBD is that it can basically be baked into anything, which is why you’ll find everything from cookies and brownies to gummies and caramel candies infused with it. Sweets are easy to take along with you in a bag on the go, while baked goods might need to be kept refrigerated to keep the CBD fresh (or just eat them quickly before they go off?).

8. In a topical rub or balm

In balm or rub form, CBD is often blended with fragrant coconut oil or beeswax, which makes it easy to spread on the skin (and makes your bod smell great too). When used topically, CBD can reach local targets, like sore muscles or joints. We’ve also heard it works wonders for period pain.

9. In a cocktail

If you’re feeling fancy go on the hunt for a CBD cocktail. We’ve heard reports that over in San Diego you can order The Mr Nice Guy – that’s a vodka and mezcal mixed drink that includes CBD. More proof, if any were needed, that CBD can be imbibed alongside any other food or drink, and that you’re going to be seeing a whole lot more of it soon.

How Much CBD Should I Take Each Day?

We always suggest starting the day with a few drops – it just sets the tone, you know? But you can top up throughout the day, no problem. Everyone will have an amount that works for them, just play around with it and see what feels good. We recommend starting with 5mg doses, 3 times per day and increasing your dosage incrementally over the course of a few weeks, ensuring you always stay below 70mg each day.

Check out our guide to CBD dosages for detailed advice.

Should I Refrigerate CBD Oil?

No, you shouldn’t. It’s best kept in a dark place like a pantry or cupboard so that it stays cool without getting too cold.

Should I Drink CBD Oil or Rub it Into My Skin?

Whichever you prefer! As outlined above, you can add CBD oil to a variety of different drinks or rub it into your skin as a topical balm. However, rubbing it into your skin tends to be better for sore joints or muscles.

What Does CBD Oil Under the Tongue Do?

This is one of the many ways the body can absorb CBD oil – as we mentioned above, your tongue is capillary-rich, meaning this method will allow the CBD to reach your bloodstream quickly.

How Long Does It Take for CBD Oil to Work on Joint Pain?

It depends on a variety of factors, such as how strong the CBD oil is (the stronger the concentration, the faster you will feel its effects) as well as how you are consuming it. For example, if you are taking CBD oil by placing a few drops under your tongue, it should take effect in around 15 to 45 minutes , while a topical application may take longer.

How Often Should I Take CBD Oil?

This varies from person to person and, when in doubt, you should always consult a doctor. However, we recommend starting with one of our 250mg bottles of CBD and taking five drops three times a day. After you begin to learn how this affects your body, you can better decide whether you should scale your dosage up or down (as long as you don’t exceed 70mg of CBD per day!).

Should I Take CBD Oil in the Morning or Evening?

Again, this is up to you and how CBD oil affects your body. People who find that CBD oil makes them feel energised, awake and clear-headed may prefer to take it in the mornings (or afternoons when they need a bit of a boost), while those who find that CBD oil helps them unwind and relax may prefer to take it in the evenings.

Can CBD Keep Me Awake at Night?

It can, but it probably won’t. While some people do feel that CBD oil makes them feel more alert, preliminary studies have shown that CBD oil is an effective way to treat insomnia.

Have we caught your attention? Now that you know how to take CBD oil, are you interested in trying it out for yourself? Check out our range of Pure CBD oils and start experimenting with your smoothies, baked goods and more!

This Is What Happens When You Mix Alcohol and CBD

Suzannah Weiss

With CBD rising in popularity, it seems people are mixing it with everything, alcohol included. Los Angeles’ bar scene is spilling over with CBD cocktail offerings, and breweries are selling CBD-infused beer. But is mixing CBD and alcohol actually a good idea?

For those who don’t know, cannabidiol [CBD] is a compound in weed with relaxant effects, but it’s not psychoactive in the way that THC is, so it won’t get you high. It’s sold as oil, in edibles, capsules, vape juice, and, apparently, alcohol.

Even if you’re not slapping the two together in a drink, CBD and alcohol can interact if you take them within four to eight hours of each other, says James Giordano, professor of neurology and biochemistry at Georgetown University Medical Center. This means that if you have a drink with dinner then take CBD dab before bed, the CBD could have a stronger effect than it would without the alcohol.

Since alcohol and CBD both relax you and lower your inhibitions, these effects could be especially strong and long-lasting when you mix the two substances. “On CBD, you’re very chill, very lighthearted, mellow. The alcohol will make that more intense,” Giordano says. “For some people, it makes them very, very sedated.” For this reason, he doesn’t recommend the combination.

“Like anything else, as doses increase of either or both, you get yourself more into a problem,” he explains. “The more you drink, the more CBD you’re taking, you get a potentiated effect that’s greater than the effect of either alone. The level of intoxication is going to be greater: greater loss of control, inhibition, motor coordination, and that becomes problematic.”

The effect this combination will have on you depends on what kind of drunk you are, though. “If you’re a happy drunk, then CBD could make you a happier drunk,” Giordano says. “If you’re an angry or violent drunk, the CBD may certainly disinhibit some of that.”

But there could actually be benefits to taking CBD with alcohol, suggests Soyona Rafatja, a New York-based functional and integrative family medicine physician. One study in the journal Psychopharmacology found that people who had alcohol and a CBD capsule had lower blood alcohol levels than those who had alcohol alone, though they experienced the same impairments in cognition and motor coordination. Another study in Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior found that rodents experienced less alcohol-induced neurodegeneration if they received CBD through a topical gel while the alcohol was administered.

More research from Free Radical Biology & Medicine showed that rodents that ingested CBD 30 minutes before ingesting alcohol were less likely to experience alcohol-induced oxidative damage in the liver than those that didn’t have the CBD. While they’re just animal studies, experts think they’re quite telling. “Alcohol decreases autophagy [degradation of damaged cells] in the liver, causing fat to accumulate in the liver and therefore cause fatty liver, inflammation, and hepatitis,” Rafatjah explains. CBD does the opposite, spurring damaged cells to degenerate, which can counteract alcohol’s effects.

Jordan Tishler, president of the medical cannabis practice InhaleMD and the Association of Cannabis Specialists, on the other hand, says there isn’t enough research to prove any interaction between alcohol and CBD. He’s more concerned about people mixing alcohol with THC—this, he says, increases THC levels in the blood eightfold.

So, the jury’s still out on the effects of combining alcohol and CBD, and experts can’t even seem to agree. If you’re going to take CBD and alcohol together, Giordano recommends at least keeping the doses low and trying both on their own first so you know how you react to them. “People who don’t drink or do CBD regularly, if they drink and do CBD together, good luck—that’s really going to be unpredictable,” he says. “If there’s any prediction at all, that prediction is, that person’s going to be pretty stoned.”

Look for companies that perform outside lab testing to ensure quality, which provides evidence their CBD is organically grown, and that the product is free from toxins such as heavy metals, pesticides, fungicides, etc. Lab reports would also verify the amount of THC in CBD oil, to ensure it’s below the federal limit of 0.3 percent THC. Reputable companies should be more than willing to share their lab-verified results with potential consumers, so buyer beware if you can’t readily access this info.

Where CBD comes from

The cannabis plant contains hundreds of chemical substances. Over 100 of these are known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids derived from cannabis plants are sometimes called phytocannabinoids.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of these cannabinoids. CBD is not intoxicating and may reduce some of the effects of tetrahydracannabinol (THC); however, it does have an effect on the brain.

CBD can be found in different varieties of the cannabis plant, including hemp.

All phytocannabinoids are regulated under the new Cannabis Act. The Act came into force on October 17, 2018.

How we regulate CBD in Canada

CBD is a controlled substance under United Nations drug control conventions. Consistent with the controlled status of CBD internationally, CBD is a controlled substance in Canada and other jurisdictions.

As a result, CBD and products containing CBD are subject to all of the rules and requirements that apply to cannabis under the Cannabis Act and its regulations. This includes CBD derived from industrial hemp plants, as well as CBD derived from other varieties of cannabis.

Under the Cannabis Act activities with phytocannabinoids (including CBD) remain illegal, unless authorized.

Before the Cannabis Act came into force, CBD was:

  • regulated under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • strictly controlled

It was not legal to produce, sell, import or export CBD unless authorized for medical or scientific purposes.

Under the Cannabis Act, CBD products remain strictly regulated and are only legal when sold in compliance with the Act and its regulations.

The Act and accompanying regulations place strict controls on cannabis:

  • possession
  • production
  • distribution
  • sale

Health Canada oversees the production of cannabis products. Health Canada is also responsible for overseeing the distribution and sale of:

  • cannabis, including any CBD-containing cannabis products for medical purposes

The provinces and territories are responsible for determining how cannabis is distributed and sold within their jurisdictions.

They set rules around:

  • how cannabis products can be sold
  • where stores may be located
  • how stores must be operated

Growing cannabis plants containing CBD for commercial sale

To cultivate any cannabis plants that you intend to sell, you must have a federal licence issued under the Cannabis Act.

This licence could be:

  • a cultivation licence under the Cannabis Regulations
    • authorizing growing of cannabis plants with varying amounts of THC and CBD
  • an industrial hemp licence under the Industrial Hemp Regulations
    • authorizing cultivation of specific varieties of cannabis plants with a THC content of no more than 0.3% in the flowering heads, branches and leaves.

Producing and selling CBD

CBD and products containing CBD are subject to all of the rules and requirements that apply to cannabis under the Cannabis Act and its regulations.

You must have a processing licence to manufacture products containing CBD for sale, no matter what the source of the CBD is.

CBD and products containing CBD, such as cannabis oil, may only be sold by a:

  • provincially or territorially-authorized cannabis retailer
  • federally-licensed seller of cannabis for medical purposes

Importing and exporting CBD products

Movement of cannabis and cannabis products between countries is covered by 3 United Nations drug conventions, including the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961 as amended by the 1972 Protocol.

CBD is currently a controlled substance under the Single Convention. CBD products may therefore only be imported or exported under very specific conditions. Any import or export must meet all of these criteria and may only be done:

  • by a holder of a licence issued under the Cannabis Regulations
  • under an import or export permit issued to the licence holder by Health Canada for that shipment
  • for a legitimate scientific or medical purpose, as per international agreements

Industrial hemp

Industrial hemp is cannabis that contains 0.3% THC or less in the flowering heads and leaves.

The Industrial Hemp Regulations under the Cannabis Act set out the requirements for cultivators of industrial hemp. As is currently the case, cultivators of industrial hemp must grow from the hemp varieties approved for commercial cultivation.

Although it may not have more than 0.3% THC, there is no limit to the amount of CBD that may be contained in industrial hemp plants.

The Cannabis Act and its regulations do not distinguish between CBD derived from industrial hemp and CBD derived from cannabis with greater than 0.3% THC.

What industrial hemp licence holders may and may not do

An industrial hemp licence holder may cultivate hemp to produce a number of different products. They may:

  • sell viable seeds
  • sell grain (i.e. non-viable seeds) or hemp seed derivatives for use in:
    • food
    • cosmetics
    • other products
  • cultivate hemp for the flowering heads, branches and leaves, which may contain CBD
  • sell those flowering heads, branches and leaves to a licence holder under the Cannabis Regulations, who may then extract the CBD

Hemp producers may not extract the CBD themselves, unless they also have a cannabis processing or research licence.

Importing and exporting industrial hemp

The Industrial Hemp Regulations authorize importing and exporting industrial hemp seed or grain, but not the flowering heads, branches or leaves.

The flowering heads, branches and leaves may only be imported or exported by a licence holder under the Cannabis Regulations:

  • with a permit issued under those regulations
  • for legitimate medical and scientific purposes

To import or export the industrial hemp seeds or grain, you must:

  • hold a licence from Health Canada
  • have an import or export permit issued by Health Canada

When importing or exporting industrial hemp seeds or grain, you may also need to obtain an import or export permit from the other country, depending on their rules.

The difference between cannabis oil and hemp-seed oil

Cannabis oil is 1 of the 5 classes of cannabis that may currently be legally sold in Canada by provincially and territorially-authorized retailers:

  • cannabis oil
  • fresh cannabis
  • dried cannabis
  • cannabis seeds
  • cannabis plants

Cannabis oil is a combination of:

  • cannabis:
    • usually in the form of a THC and/or CBD-rich extract from the leaves and flowering heads of the cannabis plant, which may include plants classified as industrial hemp
  • a vegetable-based or plant-based oil such as:
    • olive
    • canola
    • grape seed
    • hemp-seed oil

Hemp-seed oil is oil made from pressing the grain of hemp plants. It is processed like other oil seeds, such as canola. In order for hemp-seed oil to be exempt from the Cannabis Act, it can’t contain more than 10 parts per million of THC.

For hemp-seed oil to be exempted from the Cannabis Act, no phytocannabinoid including THC and CBD may be added or concentrated by processing.

Hemp-seed oil is marketed in Canada in:

  • food
  • cosmetics
  • natural health products
  • veterinary health products

CBD and prescription drugs

All phytocannabinoids, with several exceptions, are listed on the Prescription Drug List. If you wish to manufacture and sell a health product containing CBD that makes a health claim, you require approval for the product as a prescription drug under the Food and Drug Regulations.

CBD in natural health products, veterinary health products and cosmetics

Only limited parts of cannabis or hemp plants may be used in a:

  • natural health product (NHPs)
    • under the Natural Health Product Regulations
  • veterinary health product (VHPs)
    • under the Food and Drug Regulations

NHPs and VHPs may only contain parts of the cannabis and hemp plants that are not considered cannabis under the Cannabis Act or that are excluded from the application of the Act. This includes things such as:

  • non-viable seeds
  • hemp-seed derivatives that are compliant with the Industrial Hemp Regulations
  • mature stalks that do not include any leaves, flowers, seeds or branches and fibre from such stalks are also excluded from the Cannabis Act, but they may not be used in veterinary health products.

Deliberately adding phytocannabinoids to such products is not permitted.

These same restrictions also apply to cosmetics, which may only contain hemp derivatives.

CBD in human food or pet food

Edible cannabis will not be permitted for sale until the Regulations Amending the Cannabis Regulations (New Classes of Cannabis) come into force on October 17, 2019.
These regulations set out strict controls to reduce the:

  • appeal of such products to youth;
  • risk of accidental consumption, especially of edible cannabis, including by youth;
  • risk of overconsumption associated with edible cannabis because of the delay in experiencing the effects of cannabis when it is ingested rather than inhaled; and
  • risk of foodborne illness associated with the production and consumption of edible cannabis.

Edible cannabis will only be available for human consumption.

Since October 2018, cannabis — both hemp and marijuana are legal for both medical and recreational use.

Today, you can purchase hemp-derived CBD products and marijuana flowers across Canadian dispensaries without a doctor’s prescription.

Legal cannabis comes with strict regulation and plenty of legal hoops to jump through just to be able to operate in the Canadian market. Many companies operating in Europe and the United States are unavailable in Canada as a direct result of this.

The best place to find CBD products approved for the Canadian market is at CBD Oil Canada.

This article will take you on a walk through the Canadian CBD world where you’ll learn the best options for buying CBD.

Summary: Buying CBD in Canada

  • For the most part, CBD oil brands in Canada aren’t available outside the country — for the best selection of Canadian-specific CBD products, check out the selection at CBD Oil Canada
  • CBD is regulated under the Cannabis Act, and it falls under the same regulations as cannabis — regardless of its THC content
  • CBD oils are completely legal in Canada, and you can buy it without a prescription
  • You won’t be able to buy CBD oil from most US or European CBD brands (exception is Endoca)
  • CBD retailers must be authorized to sell cannabis products — a process that can take many months and cripling legal fees

How to Buy CBD Products in Canada (Legally)

The Canadian CBD market is very different from pretty much everywhere else simply because the whole plant is legal and regulated. The same restrictions apply whether a company is selling CBD oil or psychoactive THC oil.

In order for CBD brands to operate here, they need to spend a ton of money on legal fees and applications and endure a rigorous application process that can take over a year to complete.

This process makes the CBD industry much more reliable than in places like the US — but it also drives up the price of CBD oil and severely limits the number of companies that offer their products in Canada.

In order to even sell CBD oil in Canada, companies need to go through a completely separate application process that requires a lot of experience to navigate. This makes it both tedious and expensive.

This means many US brands haven’t bothered to apply and don’t offer direct shipping to Canada. It also means the CBD marketplace in Canada is very unique to the country. Many of the brands operating here aren’t offered anywhere else in the world.

The best place to shop for Canadian CBD products is through a Canadian CBD marketplace.

I live in Canada and have used this company several times. My favorite brand here is Island Therapeutics — which sell some really nice full-spectrum hemp extract grown in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.

Tips for Buying CBD in Canada

  • Order from a Canadian-certified CBD retailer — such as CBD Oil Canada
  • European CBD brands are more likely to ship to Canada than US brands
  • Understand the differences between CBD oil and THC oil
  • Expect to pay about 15% more for CBD oil in Canada compared to the US
  • Know your retailer/company — shop from proven brands like Island Therapeutics
  • Don’t look purely at aesthetics — your CBD product can have great branding and still be of poor quality
  • Look for evidence of third-party testing before you buy
  • Avoid buying CBD labeled with health claims — this is illegal in Canada

A Brief History of Cannabis Laws in Canada

Canada has a complex cannabis history.

At the beginning of the 19th century, hemp cultivation was considered “the source of wealth to settlers.” The government distributed hemp seeds to farmers in hopes of stimulating the economy for its many potential uses.

Towards the end of the century, cannabis production was replaced with cotton due to cheaper labor costs.

In 1923, cannabis was added on the Confidential Restricted List under the Narcotics Drug Act Amendment Bill — 14 years before the United States prohibited cannabis.

Historians believe that one of the main reasons for cannabis prohibition was a paragraph from the book, The Black Candle. The author, Emily Murphy — the first female magistrate in Canada — described cannabis as an initiator of homicidal tendencies in users.

In the period between 1930 – 1940, cannabis convictions increased. Through the following years, cannabis was more and more equated with marijuana, and its psychoactive effects, which ultimately affected hemp’s legal status.

Marijuana became popular in Canada in the 60s with the rise of the counterculture. Ten years later, advocates made efforts to legalize marijuana.

In 1998, the Canadian government allowed cultivation and processing of industrial hemp under very restrictive rules.

In 2003 and 2004, two bills on the decriminalization of recreational marijuana failed. In 2006, penalties increased, and the maximum sentence on cannabis production doubled from 7 to 14 years.

Today, under the Cannabis Act, cannabis — regardless of its THC content — is completely legal in Canada. The country allows the cultivation of both marijuana and industrial hemp.

Is CBD Legal In Canada?

Under the Cannabis Act, both marijuana and industrial hemp are completely legal in Canada. However, only cannabis licensed processors and retailers can extract, produce, and sell CBD.

For consumers, it’s easy to order CBD oils if you live in Canada. The hard part is for the people and companies selling CBD oil.

Canada has very strict regulations about who can sell cannabis products. Everything from the storage, labeling, advertising, and pricing are tightly controlled by the Canadian government.

Anybody that wants to sell CBD oils in Canada needs to go through a complicated application process that can take several months. The whole process costs a fortune and leaves a lot of startup founders pulling their hair out.

Canadian Law: What is The Cannabis Act?

During his campaign in 2015, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to legalize recreational marijuana. In October 2018, the Canadian Cannabis Act came into effect, amending the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and the Criminal Code.

Before the Cannabis Act, CBD was strictly regulated under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and was illegal to produce it or sell unless it was authorized for medical or scientific purposes.

The Cannabis Act includes several regulations on the cannabis plant — both marijuana and hemp.

Following its rules, you must be at least 19 (18 in Alberta and Quebec) years of age to purchase cannabis products, and you’re limited to 30 grams of dried cannabis in public at a time.

30 grams is pretty generous. This works out to just over an ounce, which is plenty for most cannabis users in a given day, but not so much that it’s even worth selling on the black market.

The Canadian government employed strict penalties if users don’t abide by these rules. Possession over the 30 gram limit could lead to 5 years in prison.

Can I Take CBD Oils From Canada to the US?

It’s illegal to transport any cannabis products across the US-Canada border. This is true even in cases where the border-state considers CBD completely legal. Even though you’re traveling from Canada to a legal-US state, the border is the domain of the federal government — where Cannabis is considered a Schedule I drug.

Europe is also problematic for transporting CBD products. While I’ve heard many stories of people doing this without any issues — some countries strictly ban any cannabis products which could land you in some serious trouble if caught.

Do not cross any borders with CBD products.

How is Industrial Hemp Regulated Under the Cannabis Act?

The Cannabis Act includes a specific regulation on hemp, known as the Industrial Hemp Regulations Program (IHR). The Industrial Hemp Regulations Program defines hemp as a cannabis plant and plant parts with a THC content of 0.3% or less in the leaves and flowering heads [1].

Under this program, Canadian farmers can grow low-THC cannabis — which we’ll refer to as industrial hemp — under government-regulated conditions. To cultivate, process, and sell industrial hemp, Canadian farmers must obtain a federal license.

The IHR allows the procession and sale of industrial hemp derivatives such as hemp seed oil, hemp flour, and hemp seeds.

Under the IHR, industrial hemp does not include derivatives obtained from the flowering parts of the leaves.

Therefore, farmers who want to extract derivatives from industrial hemp (including CBD), must obtain a cannabis processing license.

The cannabis processing license authorizes the grower to cultivate hemp for the parts that have CBD and process them for CBD products.

Without this license, the hemp grower can still cultivate the plant for CBD-containing parts but only sell them to a licensed cannabis processor.

Final Notes on Buying CBD In Canada

Canada is a cannabis enthusiast’s dream. The country’s laws are friendly towards the cannabis plant — which means buying both hemp and marijuana products easy to buy online and in-store.

However, along with the openness comes a lot of regulation. Canada treats cannabis products a lot like alcohol — which means there are strict rules regulating who can make and sell CBD products.

Selling CBD oils in Canada requires a lot of money, and a lot of legal hoops to jump through which can take several months or longer.

Most of the CBD brands sold in Canada are strictly based out of Canada. You’ll be hard-pressed to find American CBD companies that ship that far North. You’re more likely to find a European company that ship CBD oils to Canada, but the shipping rates can be hard to justify.

Instead, head to a marketplace like CBD Oil Canada, or check out some Canadian CBD brands like Island Therapeutics, Ontario Cannabis Shop, or Tilray.

Canada was one of the first countries to completely legalize cannabis — Including CBD oil. Learn where you can buy quality CBD oil in Canada.

What’s the Normal Dose of CBD?

The most common dose of CBD is 20 – 40 mg per dose. Some people take much less (as low as 1 mg), others take much higher (up to 100 mg).

Depending on the strength of the product you’re using, this could be anywhere from a few drops to several milliliters of oil. It could also involve anywhere from 1 – 5 capsules or gummies per dose.

The truth is that the optimal dose of CBD is different for everybody.

It’s common for two people with identical weight to respond very differently to the same dose of CBD. One person may find the ideal dose for them is 30 mg of CBD, while the other responds better to just 10 mg.

The ideal dose of CBD for you depends on a variety of factors, including:

  1. Your size and weight
  2. The severity of the condition you’re treating
  3. Your tolerance to CBD
  4. Your individual body chemistry
  5. The potency of the CBD oil, capsules, gummies, or other CBD products you’re using

The best way to find the right dose for your body is to start with a very low dose (2 mg, for example) and increasing by 2-5 mg per dose until you find what works best for you.

CBD Dosage For Anxiety

The effective dose of CBD oil for anxiety or chronic stress usually falls on the moderate to heavy range of the spectrum.

However, some people with anxiety disorders find they’re especially sensitive to CBD may only need a small dose.

When using CBD oil to manage anxiety levels, it’s best to start with a mild dose first to see how you respond. If you don’t see any improvement, move up to the moderate dosage next. Most people notice improvement with the moderate or heavy dosage according to their weight.

For best results, take CBD oil first thing in the morning, and repeat around lunch time. Many people will take a mild “booster dose” about 30 to 60 minutes before engaging in activities that trigger their anxiety.

CBD Dosage For Pain

The dose of CBD oil for pain can vary significantly. For mild pain, such as low-grade arthritis, mild PMS pain, or low back pain — a mild or moderate dose of CBD oil will usually do the trick.

For more severe pain, nerve pain, or treatment-resistant multiple sclerosis or cancer pain — you’ll likely need to use a heavy dose of CBD oil.

Some people experience the painkilling benefits of CBD oil immediately, others need to take the oil for a few days or weeks before noticing any improvement.

The time it takes to notice improvement depends on the underlying condition that’s causing the pain.

Inflammatory pain, cancer pain, or pain from endometriosis can take a long time — while arthritis pain, digestive pain, muscle pain, and PMS pain usually improve within a few hours of taking CBD oil.

For arthritis or joint pain, you can get faster effects by using a CBD pain cream alongside your CBD oil.

CBD Dosage For Sleep

CBD oil has been shown to improve both the quality and duration of sleep — but studies have shown the effective dose of CBD oil for sleep is higher than other conditions. Aim for the heavy dose of CBD oil if the goal is to improve your sleep.

Low doses of CBD (less than 10 mg) can have a stimulating effect, while higher doses (20 mg or higher) are generally much more sedative. The more CBD oil you use, the stronger the sedative effect.

Certain types of CBD extracts also tend to have a stronger impact on sleep. For example, CBD oils that contain sleep-supportive terpenes such as linalool, bisabolol, lavandin, or myrcene have the strongest sedative action.

You can also find CBD oils that contain melatonin to make the oil even better for promoting sleep.

CBD Dosage For Depression

CBD oil is useful for managing symptoms of many mood disorders — including depression.

Finding the right dose of CBD oil for depression can take some trial and error. The underlying processes that cause depression don’t happen overnight, and they won’t disappear overnight either. It can take several weeks or months of steady CBD oil supplementation — along with other lifestyle modifications — before you can expect any real improvement.

It’s best to start with a mild or moderate dosage of CBD oil for a few weeks before graduating to the heavy dose once you understand how CBD affects your body individually.

Calculating the Dose of CBD Based on Your Weight (How This Calculator Works)

While the dose of CBD is unique for everybody, there is a general rule of thumb that can be used to determine an estimated dose based on your weight and the strength of effects you’re looking for (low, medium, and high strength).

cbd dosage

Our dosage calculator is based on the calculations listed below. These doses are estimates and should not be used to replace professional medical advice regarding dosage.

I recommend you start with the low-strength dose when using CBD for the first time and increase the dose slowly over time. When you find a dose that works, you’ve found the right dose for your body. If you experience side effects, you’ve found your upper limit. Reduce the dose to the last amount that didn’t produce side effects.

Calculating the Dose of CBD By Weight & Strength:
  • Low strength → 1 mg CBD per 10 pounds (2 mg per 10 kg)
  • Medium strength → 3 mg CBD per 10 pounds (7 mg per 10 kg)
  • High strength → 6 mg CBD per 10 pounds (13 mg per 10 kg)

It’s important to note that this measurement is in pure CBD, not CBD oil.

We’ll go over calculating how much CBD oil this dose works out to later on. Once you know how much CBD you should be using, you can find the equivalent amount of CBD oil depending on the potency of the oil you’re using.

CBD Dosage Chart by Weight & Strength (in mg)

The optimal dose of CBD depends on the combination of your weight and desired dosage.

A smaller, 90 lb woman is going to need a much smaller dose than a large 250 lb football player — for example. And someone looking for mild relief from stress or anxiety isn’t going to need a high dose like someone looking to treat persistent pain.

You can use this CBD dosage chart to visualize how the dose of CBD changes according to your body weight and desired strength of effects.

DAILY CBD DOSAGE

The use of CBD is becoming increasingly popular in the world. And the number of people who begin to use CBD for therapeutic purposes is also increasing. Therefore, the main question becomes “What is the optimal daily dosage of CBD for me?”

For your convenience, here, you can see the differences between the dose levels in the bodyweight dosage table.

CBD Dosage Chart

Note: If you have calculated your dosage at which you get the right desired effect, you no longer need to increase the CBD dosage. Also, if necessary, due to the individual characteristics of your body, if you do not feel the desired effect and you want to improve your experience you can slightly increase the dosage or repeat CBD dosage later.

Why Do You Need to Calculate the Dosage of CBD?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not issued a recommended daily dose since the daily dosage is subjective and individual. Given your weight, metabolic rate, as well as the desired effect of consumption.

Which Factors Influence Your CBD Dosage Level?

• Human’s body weight plays an essential role in calculating the daily dosage of a CBD product. The more bodyweight – the higher the dosage is needed. And vice versa.
• The rate of absorption and distribution of CBD by endocannabinoid receptors, which is also an individual factor.
• Purpose of use and desired effect.
• Method of use (bioavailability indicator). For example, Oil and Edible CBD products before entering the bloodstream must pass through the digestive system. In contrast, the use of CBD by vaporization, bypassing the digestive system, enters the bloodstream from the lungs faster.

Can You Overdose on CBD?

The answer is simple: unlikely. CBD is a natural product, non-toxic, and non-psychoactive. The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested that the CBD is relatively safe to use.

To “overdose” you will need a very high dose of CBD in one go (more than 2000 mg CBD consistency). It is not necessary to increase the dosage, as at a low level, you can be quite satisfied with the result. We also want to note that CBD is a natural component and side effects are possible with a sharp increase in dosage or case of individual intolerance. However, even in this case, the side effects will not be long-term or have serious consequences.

In any case, if you are new to the use of CBD, we recommend starting with small doses and, if necessary, may increase.

Recommendations:

To start taking CBD, we suggest using minimum dosage, not more than 10 – 15 mg per day for the first week. If necessary, after this, you can gradually increase the level of daily CBD until you find the right desired effect for you.

Consider the condition of which particular symptoms you want to improve.

A severe condition (glaucoma, chronic pain, sleep disturbances, cramps, etc.) requires higher doses than alleviating anxiety states.

what does cbd oil smell like

Does CBD Smell Like Weed? | 2020 |

Plant & Hemp

Mar 12, 2020 · 3 min read

We’ve covered the differences between THC and CBD a few times in these pages, but there’s a question we are yet to cover, does CBD smell like weed?

It’s a simple question, but one we are asked often, especially considering the dry flower strains we have such as Purple Haze , which has a specific smell expected to come alongside the name.

There’s a few reasons why you could be curious about this, but whether you want to know so you can enjoy the smell yourself, or you’re worried that a notable scent usually specific to something else may get you some unwanted attention, we’re here to help and to give you an answer.

The answer to the question is not straightforward, however (when are they, really?) so to get there, we have to make a few stops.

Terpene Profiles

When it comes to THC heavy cannabis, the scent of a strain, along with the flavour, depends heavily (but not exclusively, we’ll get to that) on the terpene profile.

Purple Haze cannabis, for example, is heavy in caryophyllene, which gives that well known peppery, spicy scent, and myrcene, which provides that famed herbal aroma recognisable in most marijuana strains.

With the CBD version of Purple Haze, the terpene profile cannot be identical, but we make sure it’s as near as dammit.

Basically, our priority in the cultivation of CBD strains is to ensure that the CBD count is where we claim it to be, and that the trace THC levels stay within the limitations set out for us by EU law.

So while CBD Purple Haze you buy from us may not smell identical to the Purple Haze strain you may be familiar with (we’re not here to judge) it is certainly close enough to be recognisable, and you can rest assured it’s a lovely, spicy, relaxing scent.

Stabilisation

Stable genetics are the other important factor when it comes to CBD smelling like its THC heavy counterparts, with the possibility for differences in phenotypes, but we try and avoid that.

The higher the rate of stabilisation, the less difference there is in genome expression, and therefore the more similarity there is in the scent.

Other factors can be at play too, down to even the soil where the particular strain is grown, so essentially, it’s impossible to create a CBD Purple Haze strain that smells exactly like a comparative THC heavy marijuana strain.

The only way you could hypothetically get an identical aroma is with the use of chemicals, and if you know anything about us, you know that is really not our way and not anything we are ever going to do.

Does CBD Smell Good?

Now here’s a question with a straighter answer, and let’s face it, it’s the more important question. Whether the scent is similar to something you know or not, what you want to know is that the strain ahs a nice smell, and that we can guarantee.

While Purple Haze, which has been our example up to this point, has a genetic profile similar to the other Purple Haze, and therefore has a tasty smell that is similar to its psychoactive cousin, we have other strains that have been designed uniquely by us, not based on other strains, and put together to create an amazing smell all of their own.

This, for example, is as lovely to smell as it is beautiful to look at. The aromatic profile is sensational, creating a fresh, summery vibe with more than a scent of pine and a little touch of citrus on the nostrils to create a refreshing blend of fabulous aromas.

All our dry flower products, and indeed any other CBD products you get from us, will always smell beautiful, because we’re people who are very fond of sensual pleasures, we like our sinuses to be softly stroked by the sweetest of scents, and we know you do too.

That’s why anything that we produce, we smell test, to check it makes us feel sublime, and to ensure it will make you feel much the same way!

What’s your favourite smelling CBD product from our collection? What would the perfect scent for a CBD product to have be for you personally?

We’ve covered the differences between THC and CBD a few times in these pages, but there’s a question we are yet to cover, does CBD smell like weed? It’s a simple question, but one we are asked often…

What does CBD oil smell like?

  • share

CBD is quickly becoming a go-to solution for a wide range of health, fitness and recovery problems, and many people use it regularly to create balance and promote wellbeing.

Even so, the misconceptions and confusion linger on. This includes an understandable tendency to associate Cannabidiol (CBD) with the recreational drugs widely referred to as cannabis.

One of the regular questions is, does CBD oil smell like weed? Some people even become concerned about using it in case their breath smells like they’ve been smoking pot!

So, what does CBD oil smell like?

A whole different type of natural product

Well for a start, it doesn’t smell the same as the substance used for recreational drug purposes. Especially as that is often set on fire and smoked!

Cannabidiol and weed do both originate for strains of cannabis or hemp plants. However, there are many variations in this plant, and many ways to strip them of components for human consumption.

The natural materials used to produce CBD are only taken from specific species of this plant, cultivated and processed to avoid a chemical called THC. (THC is the component of recreational drugs that creates the sensation of being “high”).

Clearly then, the non-intoxicating and pure components used to manufacture CBD are already different from strong-smelling and psychoactive cannabis bi-products.

Careful manufacture to create pure versions

From this point, the active and beneficial CBD base ingredients are carefully processed to help them to do their work.

For example, sometimes the active ingredients are encased in capsules for consumption. Often though, the carefully selected components of CBD are added to a neutral base oil. The oil is used to carry the active ingredients to where they need to go, in the human body.

This expert manufacturing process – under carefully regulated lab conditions – generally makes CBD odourless.

The sweet smell of success

If it does smell of anything, it may have a slightly earthy, natural aroma; the sort of thing you would expect from any plant-based health and wellbeing product. Though this could also be the faintest of smells coming from the carrier oil, rather than the active ingredients!

This would usually not be a smell that lingers in your mouth after using CBD oil. Nor is it a scent that can trigger allergies or asthma, for example.

If you buy CBD oil for less medically supported suppliers – who are not as scrupulous in their sourcing and production methods – the situation may be different. The purity, strength and even smell of your CBD oil could vary widely. Also, if they use hemp oil as a carrier, then you may have a CBD product that has the familiar “tang” of weed in its scent.

The message is to buy from us to be sure you receive a quality product that’s been produced to avoid all side effects including a weedy smell!

CBD is quickly becoming a go-to solution for a wide range of health, fitness and recovery problems, and many people use it regularly to create balance.

  1. How does CBD interact with the body?
  2. The method of consumption matters
  3. Dosage matters
  4. How long does it take CBD to get out of your system?

So, you’ve heard about cannabidiol (CBD) oil possibly working wonders for chronic pain relief, anxiety, and many other conditions. You finally sit down, unscrew the cap from the CBD oil bottle, and prepare to set out on a soothing journey guided by this non-intoxicating cannabinoid. After taking a few drops of CBD oil or applying a CBD-infused topical to the skin, you might start to ponder the following questions:

  • How long does it take for CBD to work?
  • How long will the effects of CBD oil last?

More clinical research is required to answer these questions with unwavering confidence, but we can still look at how CBD interacts with the body to come up with well-educated estimates.

How does CBD interact with the body?

CBD interacts with the brain and body through a number of different mechanisms, creating a complex relationship that still merits further research before we can fully understand how this cannabinoid might relieve certain ailments.

Upon entering the system CBD interacts with a wide range of proteins in the body and central nervous system. A key part of this interaction takes place within the endocannabinoid system (ECS), specifically the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors. Unlike THC, which is the intoxicating cannabinoid that binds to these receptors and creates the stoned effect, CBD actually has an inverse effect. When cannabidiol is introduced to the ECS, it inhibits the absorption of anandamide, a natural cannabinoid that regulates pain.

CBD also interacts with other receptor proteins not directly related to the ECS, such as the serotonin receptor 5-HT1A and vanilloid receptor TRPV1. The widely perceived anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties of CBD could stem from the activation of these additional biological pathways.

The relationship between CBD and the human body is rather complicated, but it’s a bit easier to understand how this cannabinoid moves through the body, as well as how long it takes CBD to leave your system. Even this answer, however, is contingent on several factors, including the method of consumption, the quality of the CBD product, and the person consuming CBD.

The method of consumption matters

Method of consumption plays a critical role in how long it will take to feel the effects of CBD. CBD is available in many different forms, and each has an influence on the onset time, among other factors.

Ingestion

The most common method for CBD consumption involves administering a couple of drops directly into the mouth. It is the quickest and easiest way to reap the potential benefits of this cannabinoid. But quickly swallowing the oil also prevents CBD from immediately entering the bloodstream, sending it instead through the digestive tract and eventually on to the liver, where it is broken down before finally reaching the bloodstream.

Studies show that when CBD compounds are metabolized by the liver, it undergoes what is called the “first pass effect,” where enzymes in the liver reduce CBD concentration before the remainder is finally sent to the bloodstream to be circulated throughout the body.

CBD oil dropper

For ingestion of CBD edibles, the same principle applies. Let’s say, for example, you’re taking CBD gummies or adding a few drops of CBD oil into your favorite recipe. It will ultimately go through the same lengthy process and reduce the total CBD concentration found in your blood stream. With ingestion, it could be one to two hours before the effects of CBD finally set in.

Sublingual

CBD oil can be consumed sublingually by placing a few drops of CBD under the tongue before swallowing. By using this method, CBD is absorbed by the mucous membranes located in the mouth, bypassing the digestive system and liver. Compared with ingestion, this process allows the consumer to skip over the initial metabolization process, where CBD molecules are broken down in the liver, allowing it to enter the bloodstream more quickly.

Inhalation

Whether you’re smoking a high-CBD strain or taking a draw from a CBD vape pen, inhalation is often seen as an effective method of delivery for CBD because of how quickly it’s absorbed in the body. When CBD is smoked or vaped, cannabinoids are sent directly to the lungs, where they are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and put into circulation throughout the body. It reaches peak concentrations within three minutes after consumption, meaning the effects can be felt shortly after use.

Topical

Topical CBD is applied directly to the skin and can be absorbed through the surface of the skin to interact with localized cannabinoid receptors. In some cases, CBD-infused topicals should be applied liberally to overcome the low cannabinoid absorption rate of the skin. When CBD is applied topically, the effect peaks at about 90 minutes. This method of administration is often used for chronic pain in specific areas.

Dosage matters

The way CBD operates throughout the body – and is inevitably excreted from the body – also depends on several factors that vary from person to person.

Body weight

The amount of body fat influences the amount of CBD needed to be effective. Someone with a larger body mass will require more CBD in order to feel the effects. Body weight and mass also affect how long CBD remains in the system. Like THC, CBD is stored in fat cells and gradually eliminated from the body through urine and feces. Does CBD have to build up in your system to work effectively? No, but it does get stored in the fat cells and can remain in the body well after the effects of CBD diminish.

Metabolism

The metabolic rate of the individual also has some sway over how long CBD stays in the system. The body’s metabolism determines how long it takes to break down and synthesize compounds, which affects how long it takes the body to process and metabolize the cannabinoid.

Frequency of use

It’s not just the human body that influences how long it takes CBD to work, but also the quality of the CBD product and how often it’s used. Once the CBD oil is acquired, the next step is to find the optimal dosing regimen, including frequency of use. Perhaps you’ve wondered to yourself:

  • Should I take CBD oil in the morning or at night?
  • What’s the right time of day to take CBD?

The answers will depend largely on the type of product, amount of CBD inside it, and the specific ailment you are targeting. Most reputable manufacturers will provide instructions on how to properly utilize the product, but experimentation may be required to find the optimal dose for you and your specific needs.

CBD dosage

Settling on the ideal CBD dosage is an important part of the treatment process, and will also impact how long CBD stays in your system.

Hemp-derived CBD products are not intended to give the user a stoned buzz or intoxicated feeling, so there’s no need to be conservative with the dosage amount. Still, it’s recommended to start with a lower dosage and gradually increase it until the ideal effects are discovered.

How long does it take CBD to get out of your system?

We’ve covered the factors that determine how long it takes for CBD to work, but what about how long it takes to get CBD out of your system? Again, it depends on many of the aforementioned factors that determine the effectiveness of the cannabinoid itself.

A 2007 study states that CBD can be detected up to 72 hours after smoking. Since the effects of CBD may be felt directly after inhalation, this method is appealing for those seeking immediate pain relief. In another study, volunteers were given soft-gelatin capsules of cannabis extract containing 2.5 milligrams of THC and 1.35 milligrams of CBD. The research team found that CBD was only detectable in the blood for up to six hours after ingestion.

Some people may be apprehensive to try CBD over concerns that it could cause them to fail a drug test. It’s highly unlikely that CBD would show up on most drug screenings, as most tests specifically look for the presence of THC and THC metabolites. But even hemp-derived CBD can contain trace amounts of THC, so there’s technically a chance, albeit extremely slim, of receiving a false positive test result from taking an unusually large dose (estimates range from 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams per day) of CBD oil.

For those worried about THC showing up in their system, look for broad-spectrum oil or products that contain pure CBD isolate. Broad-spectrum oil, as opposed to full spectrum oil, is refined to exclude the trace amounts of THC that may have been present in the hemp plant. Products with CBD isolate contain no THC or other plant-based cannabinoids. To find high-quality CBD, search for products that come with a certificate of analysis from a third-party testing lab to ensure that the information listed on the product label is accurate. Also, be on the lookout for products that claim to be hemp seed oil or hemp oil, which seldom contains any CBD at all.

Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil: What’s the Difference?

Hemp oil vs. CBD oil

With surging interest in CBD since the U.S. Farm Bill passed in late 2018, you may be curious about the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil. Unheard of only a few years ago, both hemp and CBD oil are proliferating store shelves, but there are significant differences between these two products.

We put together a guide to help you learn about the similarities and differences between the two hemp derivatives, how to figure out what you need, and where to get the right product.

Hemp Oil & CBD Oil Differences:

What is Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil or hempseed oil is what it sounds like: oil that’s been extracted from the seeds of the industrial hemp variety of the cannabis sativa plant. To extract the oil, hemp seeds are pressed and bottled or further processed and refined before bottling. Hemp oil is rich in omega fatty acids, vitamin E, and protein.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD or cannabidiol oil is derived from the cannabis sativa (hemp) plant. Instead of using the seeds, CBD is extracted from the flowers, leaves, stems, and stalks of matured hemp plants. CBD oil can be extracted through several methods, including carbon dioxide, ethanol, and even olive oil. The extraction method can play a part in the quality of CBD oil.

Similarities Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil

  • Both are oils.
  • Both can come from the cannabis sativa plant.
  • Both are non-intoxicating.
  • Both can be applied topically or ingested.

Differences Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil

  • Each is derived from a different part of the plant.
  • Hemp oil can only be derived from the industrial hemp variety of cannabis sativa, CBD oil can be sourced through several different varieties of the cannabis plant.
  • Reputable CBD oil will come with a certificate of analysis (COA) that details exactly what’s in the product. Hemp oil will not come with a COA.
  • CBD oil can legally contain up to 0.3% THC based on federal law in the U.S. Hemp oil contains no THC. State and local laws may add other regulations to this.
  • Some states have laws that apply to the distribution and manufacture of CBD; hemp oil containing no THC has no such restrictions.
  • Hemp oil is a nutrient-rich oil; it contains no cannabinoids and does not reap the benefits of the entourage effect.
  • Hemp oil can be purchased on Amazon, but CBD cannot.
  • Hemp oil has been used in beauty products for several years, but CBD is relatively new to all industries.
  • Though they can both be used topically or ingested, you’re more likely to use hemp oil topically and ingest CBD oil.

Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil and the Entourage Effect

Hemp oil vs. full spectrum CBD oil

Hemp oil has many unique benefits but cannot give you the same as CBD oil thanks to the entourage effect. It is manufactured only from the seeds of the cannabis sativa plant, while full spectrum CBD oil uses the entire plant from stem to leaf for production.

When you harvest oil from the entire plant, you get every potential beneficial compound the plant has to offer, including not just CBD, but dozens of other cannabinoids and scent compounds called terpenes.

Hemp seed oil doesn’t have the same cannabinoid profile, terpenes, or other beneficial compounds. You’re only getting a fraction of the benefits that you would from CBD oil and not tapping into the entourage effect.

Why does it matter? The entourage effect is the belief that the different compounds of the cannabis plant work better when they’re used together compared to being used individually. The terpenes help the cannabinoids achieve their best effects; the cannabinoids help other cannabinoids – everything works together harmoniously.

With the entourage effect, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You get the benefits of the entourage effect with full spectrum CBD oil but not with hemp seed oil.

Reading Hemp Oil and CBD Oil Labels

CBD oil is currently unregulated. Marketers and manufacturers might use misleading labeling or claim unfound benefits on their products. Always read the ingredients list to be certain what you’re getting and ignore what the label says.

Hemp oil should always use hemp seed oil as the active ingredient, while CBD oil should list cannabidiol, full spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD, hemp (not hempseed), or phytocannabinoid-rich CBD as its primary ingredient.

The NuLeaf Naturals Difference

Full spectrum CBD oil from NuLeaf Naturals is blended with pure, organic hemp oil, so you’re getting the best of both worlds. NuLeaf Naturals uses a two-part extraction process in creating CBD oil, which ensures the greatest benefit from the harvested plants.

You can take CBD oil topically, or you can ingest it or take it under the tongue. When choosing a CBD oil, do not be swayed to select purely on cost, as this is one industry where you get what you pay for.

Choose CBD oil that is pure, organic, and full spectrum. Be sure to check out the company’s lab-verified test results. You can access NuLeaf Naturals’ most recent test results here.

Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil: What’s The Difference?

The main difference between hemp oil vs CBD oil, is that hemp oil has little to no CBD content. Hemp Oil is made by cold-pressing the hemp seeds into an omega-rich culinary oil. CBD oil is made by extracting the compound CBD from the leaves, flowers and stalks of a hemp plant. However, both hemp oil and CBD oil, have their own health benefits.

If you’ve read anything about the wellness trends for 2020 and 2021 then chances are you’ve heard of hemp oil and CBD oil (and chances are you’re a bit confused).

We’re here to make understanding CBD oil vs hemp seed oil as easy as loving them is. In a sentence, hemp oil (also known as hemp seed oil) comes from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plants and, while it does have health benefits, does not contain CBD. CBD oil, on the other hand, is a chemical compound extracted from the leaves, flowers and stalk of the same plant, and is used to treat everything from depression and anxiety to epilepsy and insomnia.

Here at Good Hemp we make a range of hemp products (from our hemp milk and hemp seeds to hemp protein powder and, of course, our original hemp oil ) from the hemp seed. But you’ve probably got more questions about all that: Are hemp oil and CBD oil the same thing or is there a difference between hemp oil and CBD oil? How exactly does CBD work? Does that mean hemp gets you high?

We thought we’d answer all of those questions in one place and delve deeper into hemp oil vs CBD oil.

What’s the difference between hemp and marijuana?

When considering the differences between hemp oil and CBD oil, it’s good to look at the broader picture. Both marijuana and hemp are varieties of the cannabis plant (hemp is Cannabis sativa , while marijuana is Cannabis indica ). The main difference between hemp and marijuana is that while marijuana contains up to 30% of the psychoactive compound called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), hemp contains virtually none (typically below 0.3%). So essentially, marijuana will get you high and hemp won’t.

Will CBD get you high?

No, CBD will not get you high because CBD is another one of the many compounds found in cannabis plants (so in both hemp and marijuana) which has no psychoactive properties.

Is CBD made from marijuana or hemp?

CBD can be extracted from both marijuana and hemp. However, as marijuana is illegal in most places, much of the CBD you’ll find on the market is made from hemp.

What are the benefits of CBD oil?

The benefits of CBD oil is that it is used to treat a number of different conditions including anxiety, depression, pain and PMS, and is said to have beneficial effects on concentration, energy levels and sleep. It’s also sometimes used topically as an anti-inflammatory (but you might want to check the price before you start pouring it on your bad back – some CBD oils can cost around £140 for a small vial).

Interested? Good! We’ve actually dedicated a whole blog post for the benefits of CBD oil – check it out to learn more!

How does CBD work?

Put simply, CBD restores homeostasis (the body’s natural balance). It works in the endocannabinoid system by activating two of its core receptors (known as CB1 and CB2), which regulate mood, temperature, cognitive function and muscle repair.

For more information, read our blog post on what CBD oil is .

What are the benefits of Good Hemp Oil?

Good Hemp’s hemp oil is super-rich in omegas (otherwise known as good fat) and has 25 times more omegas than olive oil. It has absolutely no trans fats (and 40% less saturated fats than olive oil).

What is omega good for?

Omega-3s are essential fatty acids that many experts believe aid good brain and heart health as well as boosting circulation and the immune system. Gamma linolenic acid (or GLA) is part of the omega-6 family and is known for its role in easing the symptoms of PMS and supporting the growth of healthy skin, hair and nails. Meanwhile omega-9 plays a role in promoting heart health by supporting balanced cholesterol levels and improving immune function.

How do I use CBD oil?

There are different ways on how to use CBD oil. Most people take a few drops of CBD oil under the tongue, but it can be added to your smoothie, coffee (apparently it takes away the jitters) or applied topically to pain points.

Can you take hemp oil and CBD oil together?

It’s perfectly safe to take hemp oil and CBD oil at together. Even combining different CBD products is considered a completely safe thing to do.

Is hemp oil better than CBD oil?

It depends on what you are using it for, as both have properties that serve different purposes. Hemp oil typically has more nutritional benefits, while CBD oil is best for treating the conditions we mentioned above (anxiety and depression). And, when it comes to hemp oil and CBD oil for pain relief, CBD oil wins (although hemp oil can help as well).

Is hemp oil good for pain?

Yes, hemp oil can be good for pain. Hemp seed oil is applied topically or ingested by many people as a form of natural pain relief. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can be useful for people suffering from a variety of painful infections, autoimmune disorders or injuries.

Can you rub hemp oil on skin for pain?

Hemp seed oil can be useful as a massage oil that can reduce pain when rubbed on sore joints.

Is hemp oil or CBD oil better for anxiety?

When it comes to hemp oil vs CBD oil for anxiety, both can help to reduce it, although it is typically agreed that CBD oil is better overall for treating anxiety. It positively interacts with the endocannabinoid system – aka what regulates our moods. Studies have found that it can help ease social anxiety and get rid of fear.

Here’s how @hijessiemay is using our pure CBD oil to help ease anxiety and sleep better at night.

does cbd oil give you the munchies

Does CBD Provoke The Munchies?

Most of us know that THC-rich cannabis can cause a spike in hunger known as the “munchies”. But what about CBD? Does cannabidiol provoke cravings or stimulate appetite?

One of the stereotypes about cannabis is that it causes a strong increase in appetite. This is not always true, since experienced users usually don’t feel the same cravings they once did—or maybe they just learned how to keep them under control. Moreover, inhaling any kind of smoke actually lowers the hunger sensation, at least for a short time. Finally, longing for sweet and fatty food after smoking might also depend on personal eating habits. Apart from all this—the munchies seem to be a real phenomenon.

While aromatic terpenes contained in cannabis flowers can increase the senses of smell and taste, making them appetite-stimulators of sorts, science is actually telling us that THC is the main culprit—not only for the psychotropic effects, but also the increase in appetite. Taking high enough doses of THC influences our endocannabinoid system to stimulate hunger. Good to know, now what about CBD? Many people want to know if CBD either increases or decreases one’s will to eat. Here’s what science has discovered so far.

CBD AGAINST LOSS OF APPETITE

Loss of appetite is often a consequence of medical problems, uneasy states of mind, or medications. Chronic conditions that cause appetite loss include chronic pain, cancer pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and multiple sclerosis. Mental health problems such as chronic stress and anxiety also cause appetite loss by affecting both brain receptors and the digestive system.

According to researchers at the University of São Paulo [4] , CBD may have the potential to decrease symptoms of social anxiety disorder associated with public speaking. Using a simulated public speaking test on 24 SAD patients, the study found that “pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, and significantly decreased alert in their anticipatory speech”.

Could this principle be applied to those suffering from both pain and nausea? A 2008 research paper alludes [5] to the antihyperalgesic potential of cannabis—specifically CBD. Further studies suggest CBD’s antiemetic potential [6] .

Based on the information available, CBD doesn’t appear to affect hunger in a disadvantageous form. With much still to learn about CBD’s impact on our metabolism, burning calories, and increasing appetite, for now, it’s difficult to provide a definitive answer.

A lot of cannabis users experience food cravings, also know as the munchies, after smoking. Does CBD induce the munchies just like THC?

Will CBD Oil Give Me The Munchies?

Marijuana is notorious for many of its side effects. It can make you giggly, sleepy, and paranoid. Arguably, its most famous side effect is the sudden increase in appetite known as ‘the munchies’. What causes this sudden spike in cravings? Is this effect common with users of CBD oil? (the short answer: no)

That ravenous increase in appetite is caused primarily by the THC present in marijuana and marijuana-derived products. The cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R) gets activated and this can lead to the desire to eat excessively. THC also interacts with cells within the brain, called pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons, which are supposed to inhibit hunger. THC over-stimulates the POMC neurons, essentially making them function in reverse. It is this POMC interaction that is theorized to be the main contributor to the insatiable cravings.

A severe reaction has its place in medicine and can be therapeutic. People facing extreme circumstances, such as cancer and cancer treatments, or AIDS, often go through Wasting Syndrome. Wasting Syndrome is defined as uncharacteristically large decreases in weight and body fat. In these types of patients, the appetite stimulation is incredibly beneficial as it enables them to maintain healthy caloric intake.

For the average consumer, these reactions are too extreme to be of much good.

CBD might affect your appetite but in a much more therapeutic and healthy way. CBD products contain a very small, legal quantity of THC to increase the strength of the CBD. As such, CBD products will not give you ‘the munchies’. Still, when we are stressed, depressed, in physical pain, or some combination of all of those, our appetites are often negatively affected. CBD oil and CBD-infused products have been shown to be remarkably effective with helping patients control their symptoms. Once a person has their symptoms under control they often find that their appetite returns to a balanced state.

This healthy appetite increase is far removed from the fridge-raiding behavior brought on by the effects of THC. Though CBD does stimulate the CB1 receptor, it does so in a less overwhelming fashion. Whereas THC over-stimulates, CBD regulates. CBD restores internal balance, which helps explain why some have found CBD to have appetite suppressing qualities. Many people find comfort in food while they are struggling with various issues in their lives. By using CBD to confront the root cause of these struggles, people find themselves returning to a healthier, balanced dietary routine.

Different substances affect different people in many different ways. For the average person though, CBD won’t have you tearing apart your kitchen in pursuit of some salty or sweet grail. Likewise, it shouldn’t turn you off from eating either. Should it have any effect on your appetite at all, it will most likely be helping you regulate a pre-existing issue and helping you restore internal harmony.

Tallahassee CBD business raided, thousands of dollars in hemp seized

For the second time in as many months, law enforcement officials seized thousands of dollars worth of hemp flowers from a Tallahassee CBD business.

On Tuesday morning, Tallahassee Police raided Natural Life on West Pensacola Street, seizing about 10 pounds of individually packaged and loose hemp flower. The products are considered industrial hemp because they contain only a trace amounts of the euphoric form of THC in marijuana, said Alex Petrick, a manager for Natural Life.

Cannabidiol or CBD oil has natural anti-anxiety effects, anti-seizure effects, anti-tumor effects, anti-inflammatory effects and can be used to battle a host of mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders.

In all, Petrick said, more than $25,000 worth of product was seized along with security camera footage. Last month, TPD,acting on a federal search warrant for a U.S. Postal Service package, seized 2 ounces of hemp and 84 individual doses totaling 2 additional ounces, according to court records.

Petrick noted that a sign on the storefront clearly states that Natural Life is not a medical marijuana treatment center.

“We believe these products are legal. I think there is a misunderstanding of the law,” Petrick said. “We have met with the lead narcotics officer that was here and he met with our lawyer as well through speakerphone. And together they went through the different laws.”

TPD spokeswoman Rachelle Denmark could not confirm or deny a search and seizure took place saying only “it is an active case.”

The move contradicts the 2014 U.S. Farm Bill Act, a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling against Drug Enforcement Agency interference in hemp commerce from earlier this year and an administrative law judge’s ruling that the plant is not a Schedule 1 drug and is mailable, said Petrick’s Tampa attorney, Michael Minardi.

Minardi, who is also the chairman of Regulate Florida and a cannabis industry advocate, said he has been working with TPD for several months and has offered to take products off the shelves investigators feel may be illegal.

Minardi said he was in the process of filing a lawsuit against several law enforcement agencies, including TPD.

Since April, postal packages and CBD and hemp-containing products have been seized from Natural Life. But the fact is, he said, what is being sold at Natural Life and other shops around the state comply with federal law.

“The analysis that law enforcement has been taking throughout the state is contrary to federal law, case law and the rights of people in this state,” Minardi said.

In 2014, the use of non-euphoric cannabis was legalized by Gov. Rick Scott to treat conditions such as epilepsy, Lou Gehrig’s disease and cancer. The use of medical marijuana to treat debilitating medical conditions was approved by 71 percent of Florida voters in 2016.

The products being sold at Natural Life and other places like it across Florida are required to come with a certificate of analysis, confirming what compounds they contain, where they are cultivated and potency if applicable. They often certify whether a product falls under the category of non-euphoric hemp or medical marijuana.

Similar products like those seized at Natural Life, which remains open for business, can be found at Whole Foods, Walmart and on Amazon.

There are often discrepancies among law enforcement agencies, Minardi said.

“In every area of the state, they are treating these products differently. All of the products that I recommend all my clients to have, and these people have, have certifications of authenticity,” he said. “Law enforcement has to continue to proceed with caution before they start making arrests and seizing peoples’ products and destroying their lives.”

Tallahassee Democrat reporters Ashley White and Jeff Burlew contributed to this report.

Abstract

Background: Both hempseed oil (HO) and flaxseed oil (FO) contain high amounts of essential fatty acids (FAs); i.e. linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n-3), but almost in opposite ratios. An excessive intake of one essential FA over the other may interfere with the metabolism of the other while the metabolisms of LA and ALA compete for the same enzymes. It is not known whether there is a difference between n-3 and n-6 FA of plant origin in the effects on serum lipid profile.

Aim of the study: To compare the effects of HO and FO on the profile of serum lipids and fasting concentrations of serum total and lipoprotein lipids, plasma glucose and insulin, and haemostatic factors in healthy humans.

Methods: Fourteen healthy volunteers participated in the study. A randomised, double-blind crossover design was used. The volunteers consumed HO and FO (30 ml/day) for 4 weeks each. The periods were separated by a 4-week washout period.

Results: The HO period resulted in higher proportions of both LA and gamma-linolenic acid in serum cholesteryl esters (CE) and triglycerides (TG) as compared with the FO period (P Conclusions: The effects of HO and FO on the profile of serum lipids differed significantly, with only minor effects on concentrations of fasting serum total or lipoprotein lipids, and no significant changes in concentrations of plasma glucose or insulin or in haemostatic factors.

Can CBD oil treat high cholesterol levels?

Can CBD oil treat high cholesterol levels?

There are plenty of frequent ailments that will affect practically everyone eventually. From arthritis to aching knees, there are some things that are just a given when it comes to getting older.

Easily one of the most prevalent of this list is cholesterol. This irritating and sometimes severely painful condition affects millions each year, and there are remarkably few options for those looking to try and treat it.

Some people are attempting to combine CBD and cholesterol in an effort to try and diminish their continuous cholesterol plague. But does it work?

Well, first of all, we need to learn what cholesterol is and how we can typically treat it.

What Is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is commonly known as an evil, dangerous substance that ruins your life, no matter how much you have.

However, cholesterol is one of the most mischaracterized bodily substances that we know of today. Instead of being wholly terrible and dangerous, cholesterol is actually a vital part of our cells and health; without it, we wouldn’t be able to survive.

Cholesterol is used to help make all kinds of vital molecules in your bodies, such as your hormones and your ability to intake vitamins. It exists in all of your cells and is what enables them to function correctly.

While the precise cholesterol definition feels almost too confusing to understand, the actual function of cholesterol is far simpler.

Essentially, cholesterol is necessary for the production of so many things that your body needs to flourish. Furthermore, it helps to regulate membrane fluidity in different temperatures, something vitally important for healthy cell growth and maintenance.

The confusing aspect of cholesterol is that we treat it as having two different definitions based on its precise source. While cholesterol in the body is one thing, we treat dietary cholesterol as something entirely different.

Dietary cholesterol is the same thing in animals as it is in humans, except it matters to us because of how we digest it when we eat animals. It is necessary to eat a sufficient level of cholesterol to maintain health. But too much of it can put you in danger.

So, what are the exact causes of high cholesterol?

What Causes High Cholesterol?

To understand high cholesterol, we need to fully comprehend the different types of cholesterol.

Cholesterol is continuously flowing through your body by way of your blood cells. In your arteries, cholesterol attaches itself to proteins in the blood and gets transported to where it needs to be. This combination of the two is referred to as a lipoprotein, and they are further broken up into two distinct types of cholesterol.

Low-Density Lipoprotein: The first one, low-density lipoprotein, also known as LDL, is the typically maligned form of cholesterol. This type of cholesterol can build up in your bloodstream, causing blockages and reducing sufficient blood flow.

High-Density Lipoprotein: The other type, high-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as the generally healthy one. This form of cholesterol can help reduce your levels of LDLs and take them back to your liver.

VLDL: Finally, diabetes increases the production of an even more dangerous form of cholesterol known as VLDL, which can cause even higher risks of developing high cholesterol.

Getting older, being a diabetic, or smoking are also other everyday things that can increase your risk of developing high cholesterol. Smoking damages your blood vessels, and age makes your body less efficient at cutting down the levels of bad cholesterol.

The precise risk factors of having high cholesterol are primarily due to a few things; diet and a lack of exercise.

If you eat a diet that is particularly high in saturated and trans fats, then you are likely to suffer from a higher than acceptable level of cholesterol. Furthermore, being obese or weighing more than you should, in general, will also put you at risk of developing high cholesterol.

Exercise is an incredibly important aspect of keeping down cholesterol, as exercise helps encourage the production and retention of HDL, the generally good cholesterol.

What Is the Primary Source of Cholesterol?

So, this is where a good deal of the confusion regarding cholesterol comes in. All of the cholesterol that you actually need in your body is created in the liver. Any extra cholesterol floating around comes from the food you eat, such as fatty foods.

This latter form of cholesterol is referred to as dietary cholesterol, and it is the main thing you need to watch out for.

So what can kind of exciting things can you do to try and reduce your cholesterol? Can you use CBD to try and reduce it?

Does CBD Lower Cholesterol?

CBD oil is one of those things that has been used to treat all kinds of different and exciting medical conditions. But cholesterol is easily one of the oldest problems considered by cannabinoid users. There is a substantial amount of evidence showing that CBD oil could help reduce cholesterol and overall improve your heart health.

Various studies, such as this one by Stanley et al. for the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, have found that CBD oil and cholesterol go together exceptionally well. That is, CBD is able to help improve your heart health and overall help treats high cholesterol.

Interestingly though, the answer to the question of ‘can CBD oil lower cholesterol?’ is, oddly enough, no. It isn’t that it can lower your cholesterol, but instead that it can help improve your heart health in general. This has the side effect of effectively lowering your cholesterol and improving your overall health.

But first, what kind of treatment options are available before considering CBD oil? How do doctors traditionally treat cholesterol with conventional medicine?

Cholesterol Treatment

The two options for cholesterol treatment are either to attempt to try and remove excess LDL cholesterol through medication or to try and improve general heart health.

Different drugs perform these effects in different ways; it all depends on the severity of cholesterol and what level of risk your high cholesterol presents.

Statins

Considered the mandatory drug for everyone over the age of 50, statins are an effective way of controlling your cholesterol production. They substantially slow down the production of cholesterol in your liver. They also actually help your body to reabsorb any extra cholesterol that is hanging around in your body.

This means that it not only acts as an effective treatment option, but it can also partially reverse any severe heart afflictions you are suffering from.

The issue is that there are some side effects with taking statins, as well as just generally being annoying because you have to take them every single day.

Bile Acid Binding Resins

This treatment option is a bit of a tricky one because it seeks to lower cholesterol production indirectly. One of the primary uses of cholesterol is in making something called bile acids, which are needed to help encourage healthy digestion.

This group of medications, called bile acid-binding resins, bind themselves to bile acids in your body, tricking your liver into thinking you don’t have enough of them. This forces your liver to reroute excess cholesterol into trying to make them, forcing the cholesterol out of your blood and using it up.

This can, of course, induce digestion troubles, but that is far and away preferable compared to suffering from coronary heart disease.

Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors

One of the main ways that dietary cholesterol enters your body is through the small intestine, where it absorbs plenty of it from your food. This group of drugs slows down the rate at which your small intestine can absorb cholesterol from your food.

The main benefit of these substances is that they are combined with other drugs, like statins, to attempt to try and create a combined effect. On their own, they don’t reverse anything. But merely act as a stopgap to limit the results for the future.

Injectable Medications

Injectable medications are a broad category, but fundamentally, they are focused on lowering the amount of cholesterol that is free in your blood.

These are ideally used for genetic conditions, such as those with diseases that create adverse levels of cholesterol. They effectively encourage your liver to absorb and remove more LDL than it would normally.

This requires frequent injections and continuous medical checkups to ensure they are working correctly, which can be a real pain.

But what about CBD oil? How could CBD oil help cholesterol?

CBD Oil and Cholesterol

CBD oil is a particularly interesting medical substance because it has effects throughout the body. This is due to how it impacts the endocannabinoid system.

The critical thing regarding how CBD oil can help cholesterol is the fact that cholesterol is, fundamentally, a fatty cell. CBD has been shown to not only help regulate all manner of different bodily functions but also how much cholesterol is maintained in the body.

You can use CBD oil as a surprisingly effective cholesterol treatment option, just by remembering to take a dose every day.

However, the primary way that CBD and cholesterol work together is due to CBD’s vascular relaxant properties. When you take CBD, it is able to help reduce your blood pressure by relaxing the arterial walls running throughout your body.

This happens because as a result of CBD’s interaction with the CB1 receptor and is a great way to help reduce excess cholesterol. As the arterial walls relax, your blood pressure is reduced, and your heart doesn’t work as hard to pump blood around the body.

Consequently, this helps ease and reduce the level and intensity of cholesterol blockages, as your body has more time to get rid of them.

Final Thoughts on CBD Oil and Cholesterol

When trying to answer the question of ‘can CBD oil lower cholesterol?’, the issue is that the answer isn’t quite as straightforward as you might have first thought.

CBD and cholesterol clearly have a well-established link to one another, but to outright say that CBD oil reduces cholesterol directly wouldn’t be entirely true. Instead, it is more the case that CBD oil can help to encourage the gradual lowering of your cholesterol levels. At the same time, it can help ease blood pressure and improve your overall health.

Both of these latter qualities are what make it so multipurpose and useful, as it is not only potentially effective as a treatment for cholesterol, but also for many other things.

The key thing to take away is that, while CBD can indeed help with excess cholesterol, it is not an emergency, completely fool proof curative. If you are suffering from serious cholesterol issues, the best thing you can do is go to your doctor and get it seen to.

There are plenty of frequent ailments that will affect practically everyone eventually. From arthritis to aching knees, there are some things that are just a given when it comes to getting older.
